Groton Rotary Club Golf Tournament a Big Success

GROTON – The Groton Rotary Club’s fourth annual golf tournament was asuccess both on and off the course. The main beneficiaries, youth scholars andcommunity non-profit organizations, will have reasons to cheer. The tournament turneda profit of nearly $15,000.

This year’s tournament drew a good cross section of the entire community, as 97golfers played the Shennecossett Golf Club, a historic Donald Ross designed course.

The Groton Rotary Club extends its gratitude and appreciation to its sevencorporate and 41 hole sign sponsors. “Without the support of these sponsors, nothingis possible,” Tournament Co-Chairman John Silsby said. “The Groton Rotary Clubespecially appreciates the major support of corporate sponsors, Brustolon Buick Motors,Yale New Haven Health, Cardinal Honda, RB Kent & Son, Mohegan Gaming &Entertainment, FW Webb, and Groton Utilities.”

Four of the sponsors also became Corporate Scholarship Sponsors, donating$1,000 toward scholarships for local high school students. They were Brustolon Motors,Cardinal Honda, R. B. Kent & Son and Groton Utilities. The $2,000 scholarships weredesignated for Fitch Senior High School, the Ella T. Grasso Technical High School, andthe Marine Science Magnet High School.

“The Groton Rotary Club continued its special corporate category, the MilitarySponsorship,” Silsby explained. “This was a special opportunity for area businesses to help Rotary honor our community’s active servicemen and veterans.” The participatingbusinesses and organizations were Naval Federal Credit Union, Yale New HavenHealth, Groton Utilities, Stonington Odd Fellows Lodge #26, Mystic Jet Center,Foxwoods Resort Casino, and the Dogwatch Café. This resulted in 28 military membersfrom the U.S. Naval Submarine Base and from within the community, golfing free.

The Groton Rotary Club raises funds annually to finance scholar awards andgrants approved by its community foundation, which is formally known as the GrotonRotary Foundation Community Grant, Inc. “The golf tournament is just one of the eventswhich help support the club’s annual giving program,” Silsby explained.

The Groton Rotary Club is a community organization dedicated to the theme,“Service Above Self”, and welcomes new members.
